Auto Glass Repair/Replacement

Have you ever driven behind someone where a rock kicked up and hit your windshield and left a pock mark or a crack? Was one of these marks in your direct line of vision? I’m sure we’ve all experienced this and a good percentage of us have even left it alone, hoping it wouldn’t get worse.

Repairing your windshield before it gets worse has a lot of benefits, maybe even some that you never thought about. If you wait too long, it can compromise vehicle safety and can impair driving visibility. Plus, it is much cheaper to repair a windshield, than to replace one. Getting a chip repaired is:

  • Convenient – Technicians can usually repair a windshield within an hour
  • Inexpensive – Most insurance companies will reimburse the repair charge
  • Safe – Repairing your windshield helps keep the original factory equipment intact
  • Environmentally Friendly – When a windshield is replaced , the old windshield ends up going to a landfill, where it will stay forever

If your windshield has a crack in it, it will probably need to be replaced. This will help restore the structural integrity of the vehicle and help protect the occupants. Your technician should be able to tell you his recommendations and why.

Here are the steps the technicians use when replacing a windshield:

  • Protective drapes are placed in the vehicles’ interior, and the wipers, moulding and cowl are carefully removed.
  • The broken windshield is completely removed. Depending on the vehicle’s condition, the existing adhesive is then removed.
  • A single use primer pad applies Sika Aktivator® to the glass to ensure a reliable seal.
  • A urethane adhesive is then applied to the vehicle frame. The vehicle is then safe to drive in about an hour for most installations.
  • The new windshield is then set in place and the cowl, moulding, and wipers are reattached.

There are numerous auto glass repair/replacement shops around that will give you a quote over the phone. They should all deal with insurance companies as well. Safelite will come to you, they have a mobile service and you don’t have to stay outside with them while they do it, you can continue to work. Another great option, is while you are having other service done on your car, or an oil change, have it taken care of all in one place.
